Kellie Harrington has secured Ireland's third medal of the Paris Olympics.

The Irish boxer is guaranteed at least a bronze following a unanimous decision win over Colombia's Angie Paola Valdes this evening.

People gathered at Diamond Park in Dublin, near where Harrington grew up, to cheer her on with the fight being shown on a big screen.

She will now progress to the semi-finals where she's guaranteed a bronze.

It will be Harrington's second Olympic medal following her quarter-final win in Tokyo.

She also becomes the first Irish woman to win a medal at two Olympic Games.

Speaking directly after her bout, Harrington said: "You don’t have time to think about what you’ve just done. You just think about what’s next.

"I’m very happy with my performances, I’m very proud of myself, I’m just glad to be here and doing what I love/hate to do, hate-to-love, love-to-hate.

“I’ve just been in my bubble. I know Mona and Daniel medalled but I’ve literally been in my bubble for the last five/six weeks.

"I’m just doing what I do. I’m just taking each day as it comes. I’m just enjoying it."

'I'm very proud of myself'

Harrington said she'll be happy whatever happens next.

"I came out here on the 29th and stepped into the ring and stepped back out of the ring and became a double Olympian," she said.

"That is history and I’m very, very proud of myself. Today I became a double Olympic medallist and that’s more history.

"I just know I have people up above looking down on me and they’re with me every step of the way.

"I won’t look back at the fight, I don’t need to. I trust my own coaches.

"We just try and stick to a plan. We give it what we have and if it works it works and if it doesn’t".

Harrington's success comes after gold for Daniel Wiffen who made history last night becoming the first Irishman to ever win an Olympic gold in swimming.

The 23-year-old stormed to gold in a time of 7:38.19 - setting a new personal best, national record and European record by a full second.

Team Ireland has now won two medals in the tournament so far - with Wiffen's success following on from Mona McSharry's bronze medal on Monday.

Harrington's next fight takes place on Saturday night.
