New research has found that one in five adults in Ireland won't tell someone if they're feeling suicidal.

The research by St Patrick's Mental Health Services also found that almost half of people who have had mental health difficulties didn't seek treatment because of stigma or embarrassment.

CEO Paul Gilligan has said Christmas can be lonely time but there are always supports to reach out to.

“You know, Christmas can be quite a stressful time as well as being a happy, joyful time,” he said.

“It’s really important that we’re aware of the fact that people may be experiencing difficulties and just seek to reach out, encourage them to check their own mental health and for them to seek support if they need it.”

Family concerns, personal issues and economic fears are the top three factors cited as influencing mental health and wellbeing.
