One in four Irish adults have below par literacy and numeracy skills, leaving Ireland trailing behind its European counterparts in terms of adult education.

That assessment of the situation comes from the National Adult Literacy Agency who say that services to assist those who want to improve their skills are inadequate.

The group are calling for the immediate implementation of a national strategy in order to help people in need of learning.
