One person has been killed and another has been injured in a shooting at a US university overnight.

The fatal shooting occurred at Winston-Salem State University at 1am this morning (local time).

The campus was placed on lockdown for approximately three hours before it reopened at 4:30am.

The deceased is believed to have been a student at the university.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the university has appealed for anyone with information on the location of a man who is suspected to be involved to contact them.

Winston-Salem University is attended by around 6,500 students.
