Who am I to judge? As she says herself, it is part of her job. In her business thin is good. Models are, unfortunately, paid to be walking clothes hangers.

Model Lynn Kelly caused a bit of a storm this week as she posted a photograph of herself during modelling lingerie.

Some of the pictures are quite shocking. Whether she likes us saying it or not, we can see her rib cage and that could be cause for concern.

It is slightly more worrying, however, to hear Lynn speak about her training regime. It is obvious she is a very fit young woman but I did need to take a sharp intake of breath as I heard her tell Pat Kenny that her early morning workout is proudly undertaken at 5.30am on ‘an empty stomach’.

As the rest of her day’s food intake consists of ‘green shakes’ and relatively small portions of carbohydrates, alarm bells rang but then I thought about the torture that jockeys put themselves through.

They are in control of a highly bred animal and yet are expected to have a body weight way below what could be seen as natural. They must 'make the weight' or not get the chance to ride in a race. How do they do it? It is obvious that many of them refrain from eating for days at a time. They may sweat the weight off through long periods in saunas. We know this happens but we don’t bat an eye. Is it because they are men? I suspect that may be part of the reason. The heroic sportsman can do these things but can the model?

Lynn was like all of us when we get excited and take a selfie. The problem was that people jumped on a bandwagon. I was tempted too if I am being totally honest. Then I thought of the jockeys. Would I prefer models to be more like our mothers, our sisters our partners? Of course but for now, she must earn a living in a business where her body shape sells. Will that change? I hope so. Lynn comes across as an intelligent person who just pressed the selfie button too soon. Let’s not crucify her.
