Met Éireann has downgraded their weather warning for the East of the country to yellow.

They have given a snow and ice warning for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Meath and say further snow showers are likely today with most of them light.

That warning will remain in place for the next 12 hours and will be reviewed this afternoon. It follows snow falls overnight.

Motorists are advised to take care as road temperatures are very low in counties Meath, Kildare, Dublin, Wicklow and Louth.  This means accumulations of up to 5 centimetres of snow.

The weather for March has not been this bad since the 1960s.

Economy feeling the pinch

Hundreds of farmers and rural residents are still suffering the effects of the heavy snow and strong winds in Northern Ireland.

While around 1,200 homes in the west of Scotland remain without power for a 6th day following a problem with mobile generators.

Scottish and Southern Energy says it still hopes to reconnect all affected customers in Arran and Kintyre by tonight. Snow damaged large sections of the network bringing down two transmission pylons.

Met Éireann forecaster Gerald Fleming says the Irish economy is also feeling the bite of this cold snap.
