Heavy rain is set to continue throughout the day with weather warnings in place across the south and east of the country.

A Status Orange rain warning will remain in place Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow until midnight tonight.

The heavy rains led to concerns over further flooding in Cork; however, no major incidents have been reported in the county so far this morning.

Emergency crews remain on standby while the Orange Warning remains in effect.

Cork City Council Director of Services David Joyce told Newstalk the torrential rain is expected to return by lunchtime.

“There were no significant issues overnight,” he said.

“We did have one tree come down and one fence in the city but other than that, it was a quiet night. There was, however, very, very heavy rain overnight but it didn’t lead to flooding.

“Please drive with care. There may be some localised ponding on the roads. The Met Éireann orange warning is in place until midnight tonight and they are predicting a second wave of very heavy rain coming in from lunchtime onwards today."

Met Éireann has said the rains could lead to disruption and localised flooding in the south and east of the country.

Junior Minister with responsibility for the Office of Public Works Patrick O’Donovan said people should take the warnings “very seriously”.

He urged people to avoid unnecessary journeys, never enter flood waters and to check in on their neighbours.

"Thunderstorm"

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather told Newstalk that last night saw some “intense thunderstorm activity.”

“[There was] a lot of lightning strikes detected and also some very heavy thundery downpours,” he said.

“The rainfall was pretty localised but it certainly did fall very quickly and very heavily in parts of the south.

“Especially of note was Roscarberry in Cork which saw some really intense and thundery downpours.”

The warnings will remain in place until midnight.
