Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison on parole and is “now at home”, South African authorities have confirmed.
The former Paralympian champion murdered his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013 when he shot her multiple times through a bathroom door, claiming he had mistaken her for a burglar.
He was originally found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) but in 2015 an appeals court overturned that verdict and convicted him of murder instead.
Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years and five months and in South Africa, prisoners become eligible for parole after serving half their sentence.
Justice?
Reeva Steenkamp's mother, June Steenkamp said the family knew parole was part of the justice system and that “the law must take its course."
She also said she was glad that under the terms of his parole, Pistorius will take anger management classes and lessons on violence against women.
"Has there been justice for Reeva?" she said.
"Has Oscar served enough time? There can never be justice if your loved one is never coming back, and no amount of time served will bring Reeva back.
“We, who remain behind, are the ones serving a life sentence."
Ms Steenkamp said she hoped to spend the rest of her life focusing on the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, which helps educate people about the abuse women face within society.
