One of two Dublin teenagers to die on the Greek island of Ios has been remembered as a larger-than-life personality who lit up the corridors of his school.
Max Wall is the first of the two teenagers from St Michael’s College who died on a Leaving Cert Holiday on the island to be laid to rest.
His funeral mass this morning heard how Max was a huge Manchester United fan and went by the nickname of 'Giggsy'.
He was described by his friends as 'the funniest man on earth', with the ceremony hearing that the world has “lost a little colour” with his passing.
St Michael's College Chaplain Fr Paddy Moran remembered celebrating Max’s graduation mass just two months ago.
“I looked out at this sea of faces, ready to embark on the next stage of their lives as young adults, whatever future I might have imagined for our students, it never occurred to me that we would be gathered two months later for the funeral of Max,” he said.
“Our hearts are broken.”
The Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook was full for this morning’s service – with mourners told that Max had made a “positive and valued” contribution to all who knew him,
Symbols representing his life – including a Manchester United jersey, a Leinster Rugby jersey, a St Michael’s School annual and a pool cue were placed at the altar by his school friends.
Max and his schoolmate Andrew O’Donnell died in separate incidents on the Greek island the weekend before last.
Andrew’s body was discovered on the morning of Sunday, July 2nd in a rocky area near the island’s main town of Hora.
He had been reported missing by a friend who got separated from him while walking home the previous night and was found following an intensive search in the area.
It is believed he had a fall on his way home.
Later on Sunday, having been involved in the search, Max Wall became ill near the port area of the island.
He was rushed to hospital, where he subsequently passed away.
The pair had been part of a large group of more than 80 students from St Michael’s who had travelled to Ios for a post-Leaving Cert holiday.
Hundreds of flowers have been left at St Michael's College in Ballsbridge in memory of both boys.
Max is to be buried at Kilternan Cemetery Park.
The funeral of Mr O’Donnell will take place in The Church of the Sacred Heart on Wednesday at 11am, followed by a private cremation.
