More than 2,100 drivers were caught speeding over the bank holiday weekend, Gardaí have revealed.

Of these drivers, 209 were caught on their phones, 75 with no seatbelt, and almost 400 for no tax and insurance.

Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries said it is worrying that warnings about road safety do not seem to be getting through to many drivers.

"It's really difficult to understand why people don't understand that doing the right thing, doing the simple things will actually help keep them alive," she said.

"Most people are returning to work on the Tuesday and they are still prepared to take drink and drugs right up 'til the night before knowing that they have to get in behind the wheel of a car, knowing that they have that journey to make and they're taking absolutely no responsibility for their actions."

60 of the 218 people arrested for driving under the influence happened from the bank holiday Monday night.
