Over 400 homes in Newtownards, Co Down, have been evacuated following the discovery of a ‘historic’ bomb.
PSNI said the homes were evacuated this morning for a “clearance operation following the discovery of a suspected historic piece of munition” on Friday.
It is suspected the device is a bomb dating back to World War II.
North Down and Ards District Commander Superintendent Johnston McDowell over 400 homes are affected by the operation.
“This is a significant number of properties, and we thank residents for their patience and understanding,” he said.
“I would like to state that if homeowners or residents have not been spoken to directly by police, or received information in relation to this matter, it’s unlikely that they will be impacted by the clearance operation at this time.”
It is expected the clearance operation will take a “number of days”.
A PSNI notice given to residents in the affected area said North Down and Ards Borough Council will offer support to those affected through an emergency support centre.
“I appreciate the disruption that this has caused, however keeping people safe is paramount, and we will not take any risks,” Mr McDowell said.
“I want to thank those who may be affected for their patience at this time.”
Motorists are advised to avoid the area near the Rivenwood housing development on Movilla Road.
