5,000 people have been ordered to pay more property tax after they had undervalued their home.

Around 10% of those had €200,000 added to the value of their home by Revenue.

The compliance rate this year is 94%.

Revenue's local property tax project manager, Vivienne Dempsey, said they are taking action against people who have not paid.

"There are several hundred cases (that) have already been placed in the hands of the sheriff - and that started in September," she said.

"And again, the balance on this is for PAYE cases, we have imposed a mandatory deduction at source; but for self-employed cases, we have a range of sanctions".

"These include refusing a tax-clearance cert, imposing a surcharge and now moving to collection, placing the liability in the hands of the sheriff," she added.

It comes as 14 councils have revised down their property tax rates for next year, which will save more than one million homeowners a total of €45m.

Six councils have chosen to reduce the tax by the maximum of 15%, including Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, South Dublin, Clare and Wicklow county councils.

The other eight local authorities reduced the property tax by 10% or lower.

Ms Dempsey spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime earlier about changes to the scheme.
