The head of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is demanding greater accountability within the civil service.
John McGuinness was responding to the annual report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) which was published yesterday.
It revealed cases of State bodies wasting public money.
In one example it was revealed that 5,000 teachers were overpaid by €1.2 million last year.
It also showed that the deficit of the State has increased to over €25 billion.
Total receipts for the State last year reached €38 billion.
That figure is up from €35 billion back in 2010.
The 2011 figure includes tax revenue and income on borrowing undertaken by the National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA).
But total expenditure or issue rose by over €10 billion to €64 billion.
Fianna Fail TD John McGuinness who chairs the PAC.
He told Breakfast here on Newstalk that inefficiencies seen in the document are unacceptable.
