Some areas of Dublin have seen a 50 per cent increase in burglaries this year.

The Irish Independent reports that gardai have recorded a sharp increase in burglaries in areas such as Crumlin, Kevin Street, Terenure and Kilmainham.

The increase in these areas is not representative of an overall trend to the same degree, although property crime in the capital has increased by 2 per cent. Gardai attribute this to a rise in burglaries and vehicle theft.

Minor crimes such as public order offences are in decline, whereas more serious crimes such as assault and robbery have increased.

"Specific operations will be in place over the coming weeks and months to address the increase in burglaries and vehicle crime," Assistant Garda Commissioner John Twomey told Dublin's Joint Policing Committee (JPC), the Irish Independent reports.

While areas such as Crumlin saw increases in thefts, burglaries and property crime, there was positive developments in other areas, as gardai report a 62 per cent drop in the number of cases involving the sale and supply of drugs. This figure appears to be highly localised however, as Terenure, in the same garda district as Crumlin, experienced a 129 per cent increase in drug cases.

The JPC – a grouping of councillors, gardai and city officials – say the cause of the increases in crimes is cutbacks.

JPC Chairman, Fianna Fáil councillor, Daithi de Roiste said gardai “simply need to be supported more on the ground.”

"It is not good enough that this Government has continued to suck resources from policing in this city whilst normal Gardai operate in threadbare conditions,” he said.

"Law and order and the protection of homeowners needs to be number one priority for 2015. People need to know that when they are in crisis and call on gardai, that officers have resources to respond immediately,” he added.
