Laws to close a loophole in the penalty points system should be in place next week.

An emergency bill to deal with the loophole has been passed unanimously by the Dáil this evening.

Transport minister Paschal Donohoe says the bill is strong enough to survive any legal challenge it might face.

He has  thanked opposition TDs for their help in getting the law passed so quickly:
