Peter Darragh Quinn who last year fled the jurisdiction having been found in contempt of court has been ordered to pay IBRC damages of US$188 (€144.9) million.

The Commercial Court has heard the nephew of bankrupt businessman Sean Quinn played a pivotal role in an unlawful scheme to put Quinn assets beyond the reach of the bank.

The sum of the damages represents the value of one major Quinn asset - the Kutuzoff Tower in Moscow - which the court heard was lost to the bank as a result of his actions.

Peter-Darragh Quinn had sought to adjourn today's proceedings until the conclusion of IBRC's conspiracy action against other members of the Quinn family. He argued by letter that he would suffer a 'grave injustice' if the case was not postponed.

But Mr. Justice Peter Kelly refused his request as last February judgment was entered against him in default of any defence being raised.

The Fermanagh businessman has also indicated again that he is appealing to the European Court of Human Rights last year's finding that he is in contempt of court. He remains the subject of an arrest warrant and faces a 3 months jail sentence if he enters the jurisdiction.

Damages of US $690 (€532) have also been awarded against 4 Quinn companies.
