A court in Los Angeles has ruled that Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke copied a Marvin Gaye song to create 'Blurred Lines'.
The singers have been told to pay $7.3m to the late singer's children for copying "Got to Give It Up".
The decision comes after almost a year of legal wrangling between Thicke and the estate of Marvin Gaye. Gaye’s family had sought $25m in damages initially.
The verdict may yet face years of appeals, however, as Rolling Stone reports a spokesperson for Williams saying:
"While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward.
"Pharrell created 'Blurred Lines' from his heart, mind and soul and the song was not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter."
