The paper also alleged the clown had knocked on someone's door and offered to paint their sills despite having no painting equipment.

The clown has featured in two top posts on the wildly popular community website Reddit, has a Facebook page with more than 26,000 likes and has been trending on Twitter under the hashtag #northamptonclown.
Last night Nicholas Bieber, a reporter for the Northampton Herald & Post tweeted a picture believed to have been originally posted on a Facebook page owned by the man who has been dressing as the clown:
CLOWN LATEST: Just found this image on the man's Facebook who we believe to be the #NorthamptonClown! @NorthamptonUK pic.twitter.com/5Gp9mIS34m

A man dressed in a Superman costume and calling himself the Clown Catcher has also been spotted in the town.

Bieber later tweeted that he was "getting closer and closer" to finding the clown, asking his followers to follow the Northampton Herald & Post for updates.
Could all of this just be a clever viral marketing campaign for the publication?
