Plans to build an urban beach in Dún Laoghaire in Co. Dublin have been unveiled. The €2.5 million investment will also see an outdoor swimming pool constructed with heated and treated seawater.
According to papers a second beach will be located alongside the floating pool.
The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Masterplan was published in 2011 following extensive consultation with relevant stakeholders. The project is inspired by the Badeschiff facility in Berlin.
A feasibility study for this project was conducted in 2012 and a project design team was appointed in February of this year.
A public consultation is now taking place with people being encouraged to make their views known by e-mailing consultation@dlharbour.ie
It is intended that the facility would be a significant amenity and tourist attraction, and will attract 150,000 visitors per year. It is thought it could be worth up to €1 million per annum to the local economy.
Once the submissions are examined, a planning application will be made and if all it goes according to plan, it could be making a splash in the summer of 2015.
Labour Councillor for Dún Laoghaire, Jane Dillon Byrne, explains the thinking behind it.
