Dublin's Orwell Road, which is home to the Russian embassy, looks set to not change its name to Independent Ukraine Road after all.
A motion due before Dublin City Council has been dropped over a lack of support from locals.
Last week a sub-committee of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council voted to start the process of renaming Orwell Road in Rathgar to Independent Ukraine Road as a gesture of solidarity.
The street also falls under Dublin City Council's boundary, and councillors there were due to consider the proposal on Monday.
But it is understood locals were concerned about the practicalities of the name change, and the impact it would have on the likes of property deeds and maps.
The motion was put forward by Labour's Dermot Lacey.
He says: "There was a difference of opinion on what the road should be called, in terms of the new road.
"Free Ukraine Road, Independent Ukraine Road, Zelenskyy Road - there was different views on that.
"There was some people feeling that the war would be long over before such a plebiscite could be enacted".
Meanwhile Councillor Peter O'Brien - who proposed the original motion - says while there will still be consultation with residents, he does not expect a vote on the name change to go ahead.
"People understood the reason why we put the motion down, and the reason why it was important to show a sign of solidarity to the Ukrainian community in Dublin in particular.
"The consultation hasn't happened yet, the engagement has happened.
"But the last thing anyone wants to do is to divide residents and divide the road".
