Waldamar Solowiow admitted hitting Mary Ryan, but denied killing her
A Polish man has been found guilty of murdering his girlfriend in north inner-city Dublin. Waldamar Solowiow had admitted hitting Mary Ryan during a drunken row in May 2012 but denied killing her.
Solowiow kept his head bowed as an interpreter told him in his native tongue that a jury had just found him guilty of murder. During his trial, the court heard how Ms. Ryan died from injuries to her head and neck on May 19th 2012.
The couple had been evicted from the apartment they shared on Sherrard Street the night before following a drunken row.
During garda questioning, Solowiow claimed Ms. Ryan had been attacked by a gang of men but he later admitted this was a lie.
He said he was angry about the eviction and that he slapped her and grabbed her by the neck after a fight broke out when he brought it up.
It took the jury just over four and a half hours to return a majority verdict. Solowiow will now serve a mandatory life sentence for her murder.
