Laser pointers are a danger in the hands of children... and politicians, as it turns out.

Australian Labour MP Adem Somyurek apologised after shining a laser on the face of another politician in the Legislative Council.

Bruce Atkinson, who was chairing the sitting, halted question time to find the source of the red dot on Liberal MP Bernie Finn’s forehead.

Atkinson then berated Somyurek, according to the Herald Sun: “You’re actually very lucky in this circumstance that I don’t send you out of the house because I regard it as that serious.”

Somyurek then apologised, saying he had just been playing with the pen: “I shouldn’t have done that, I consider Mr Finn a friend.”

After some further discussion, it was decided against making Somyurek sit in the corner for the rest of the day.
