Politicians plan ‘gathering of elders’ for month of August
As The Gathering moves into its fourth month, the Houses of the Oireactas have announced plans to have what it calls a ‘gathering of elders’ for the month of August.
Announcing the plan, An Ceann Comhlaire Sean Barrett, said that every living ex-TD and Senator will be invited to take part in a month-long series of policy reviews and debates which will attempt to come to an all-party consensus on the long term path for the country.
Speaking this morning, Mr Barrett said, “This is an unique event in both Irish and world history. No other western democracy has decided to harness the collective memory of past legislators who have seen good and bad times in the 90-year history of our great republic.”
Mr. Barrett was coy on exact numbers but it is estimated that there are between 500-600 extant members.
While the event may raise the hackles of hard-pressed tax payers, the four party leaders, as well as the technical group, have agreed that there will be no travel or subsistence expenses paid. However, each participant will be given a ministerial salary for the 28 days of the event at a cost of €8.43 million, and those living outside of Dublin will be accommodated at the Four Season's hotel in Ballsbridge for the duration of the month long estate.
The event has received the backing of the troika.
The full schedule for the initiative will be announced later today, April 1st.
