"Some view their 40-year presence on the Dublin skyline as iconic; others as a blight on the landscape.”
These were the words of ESB chief executive Pat O'Doherty, responding to a plea from Leo Varadkar not to tear down the Poolbeg chimneys. The Sandymount landmarks are under threat following an announcement that their upkeep is a drain on resources – and that a decision on whether to keep them or not will be made by the end of the year.
However, his words may come as a surprise to Dubliners – many of whom have grown up with the chimneys as an integral and universally lauded part of the city's skyline.
So we want to know: do you think the chimneys are an icon or an eyesore? Vote to let us know.
