A report in today's Irish Times highlights the risk of segregation forming in the Irish primary school system, with 80 per cent of non-Irish children concentrated in only 23 per cent of primary schools.
Though integration is still above many other OECD countries, the government is developing legislation to combat discriminatory admissions policies.
Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan is preparing the Education (Admission to School) Bill, which seeks to improve the inclusivity of Irish primary schools.
The bill will make it illegal for schools to discriminate on the basis of faith, race or disability; and will require schools to publish their admissions policy.
