No express law prohibits the physical punishment of children in the home, and a parent cannot be prosecuted unless it amounts to physical abuse.
However the Irish Society for the Protection of Children has in past urged parents not to resort to slapping as a form of punishment which they view as a human rights issue.
An ISPCC report will be released today looking at the perceptions of slapping children and the level of support for banning it.
Ireland is still in breach of international human rights obligations by not introducing a ban on slapping.
