In its annual school costs survey, the Barnardos found that lower income families are unable to afford basics such as books and uniforms.

The children’s charity is calling on the government to do more to ensure equal access to education for all children.

Barnardos says costs far outstrip the State's Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.

The charity's Chief Executive Fergus Finlay says that schools who insist on crests being sewn unto jumpers could be doing so on the basis of ‘snobbery’:
