Non-refundable application fees are currently being charged by some primary schools, according to a Sunday Times investigation.

Schools can currently draw up their own admission policies that can give "preferential treatment to children based on historical family links, academic or sporting achievements, how early they joined the queue, or whether their parents could afford the advance deposit."

Despite plans by Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn to abolish the process under new regulation, the practice is widespread with many schools charging €100 for preferred consideration.
