NUI Galway is set to award 40 CAO points to a select number of athletes who meet criteria based on their sporting achievements and potential, as well as their academic achievement.

However Ivan Yates on Newstalk Breakfast says the initiative is discriminatory and is only there to give a university more prestige:

NUIG are not the first university here to start this either as UCD, DCU, UCC and UUJ all have similar schemes in place.

In Galway's case students will get their added points once they also achieve a minimum 350 points in their Leaving Cert exams and the university is believed to be finalizing a similar scheme to attract top students in the arts and music.

What do you think? Do student athletes deserve preferential treatment?
