This week has seen the Irish Sun ‘cover-up’ their models on their infamous third page. Although still featuring scantily-clad female models such as Rosanna Davison and Sylvie van der Vaart, the editorial team has opted to at least temporarily have the women keep their tops on.

In the UK, where the traditional Page 3 remains, a campaign for its removal has gained momentum recently. Several prominent personalities and politicians - ranging from Jennifer Saunders to Alastair Campbell - have voiced their objections. As of writing, a public petition to ‘take the bare breasts out of The Sun’ has managed to gain 113,451 digital signatures (although organisers are still some way to go until they manage the one million they are looking for). Arguments against Page 3 range from feminist objections to simply trying to make the paper more family and audience friendly.

Those involved in The Sun have vocally defended the ‘tradition’ of Page 3. The paper’s former UK editor Dominic Mohan has called the paper’s topless page an “innocuous British institution” that “celebrates natural beauty”, while its new editor David Dinsmore has also pledged his support for the continuation of Page 3. A common argument is that the paper is simply serving a sizable portion of its audience, and is ultimately a profitable & popular feature for the paper that's part of its overall identity.

Do you agree with with the campaign against topless models on Page 3, or do you think it’s political correctness gone too far? Would removing the ‘bare breasts’ change your perception of the tabloid? Is Page 3 a harmless tradition or outdated institution? Vote in our poll and leave your comments below.
