Researchers at a university in Vienna have concluded that men make judgements about how attractive a woman is by listening to her speaking voice - and that these hasty judgements are proved right, with the study finding a "significant" link between facial and vocal attractiveness.
“People can make quite reliable guesses about women’s facial attractiveness on the basis of their voices,” said author Markus Koppensteiner, an anthropologist at the University of Vienna.
“Attractive voices may create an idea about what a woman will look like,” he added.
In the test, the anthropologists took photographs of 42 women, as well as recordings of their voices. The average age of the women was 24.
A group of male volunteers, with an average age of 25, then listened to the voices and rated them for their attractive qualities. A second group of men then rated the women’s faces.
After crunching the numbers, the statistics showed that the women who received high marks for their facial appearance also scored highly in vocal attractiveness, with the research team describing the link as a “significant relationship.”
On the facial front, the researchers also graphed the different sizes, shapes, and position of the features on each of the women’s faces to try and figure out what physical make-up is the most attractive.
According to the study, the most attractive combination for women is to have “lifted jawbones, less robust jaws and fuller lips.”
Mr Koppensteiner said: ‘It could explain why women who have made it [on radio] also have attractive faces.’
This study comes after previous anthropological research into women’s attitudes to male voices concluded that the ideal male voice has a lower pitch, indicating a more robust physical frame.
