In his Christmas Day message the Pope has condemned the slaughter of what he calls the "defenceless" in Syria.

Benedict the Sixteenth also urged Israelis and Palestinians to find the courage to negotiate.

He suggested too that Arab spring nations - especially Egypt - should build just and respectful societies.
