Pope Francis is calling for a "courageous defence of children" to protect them from abuse. 

But he made no mention of the scandals in many countries in which clergy abused children and church hierarchy covered up for them. 

His words came at a Mass celebrated in a packed St. Peter's Square and later to an avenue in Rome to meet those who couldn't get in.
