Pope Benedict has granted a Christmas pardon to his ex-butler who stole and leaked sensitive documents in the 'Vatileaks' scandal.

Paolo Gabriele was convicted of theft in October and had begun an 18-month sentence.

The Vatican says the Pope visited Gabriele at his cell this morning to tell him he would be freed.

A second man, convicted of assisting the butler, has also been pardoned.
