The Taoiseach says he expects insurance companies to engage with government over a long-term solution for homeowners at high risk of flood damage.

Reports today suggest that the government is considering a new levy on all insurance policies to create a distress fund to help those who lives in areas affected by flooding who are unable to get insurance cover.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan says talks on the issue with an industry group are not making progress, while he has also criticised the effort insurance companies are making to help those badly-affected by flooding.

While he has not confirmed the report, the Taoiseach says the insurance industry need to engage with government to find a solution to the problem.

Speaking in New York, Enda Kenny says people who invest in properties and businesses need to be able to protect their properties.

Political Correspondent with the Irish Independent John Downing told Newstalk Breakfast earlier that the proposed levy would just be the latest additional insurance cost for people in this country.
