Ireland could be getting a blast of the Northern Lights to celebrate the New Year.

'Aurora Alerts Ireland' said a natural light show could appear across much of the country tomorrow night.

Experts have said there has been major solar flare activity on the sun today.

If the cloud stays away, that could mean the Northern Lights will be visible as far south as Dublin from 6pm tomorrow evening until 3am on New Year's Day.

However, the rest of the county may not be as lucky with Status Yellow weather warnings issued for 5 coastal counties.

A Status Yellow warning for rain is in effect in Donegal until 11am tomorrow, while a 24 hour rain warning for Cork and Kerry kicks in at 6am tomorrow.

A yellow alert for wind is in place for Donegal, Mayo and Galway from midnight tonight until 11am tomorrow.
