The body of a woman discovered in Co Mayo on Friday has been taken to the morgue at Mayo University Hospital.

Gardaí investigating the discovery of the body at a house in the Kilbree Lower area of Westport have arrested a man in his 40s.

A post mortem is scheduled to take place on the body of the woman, also aged in her 40s, later on Saturday.

The scene is currently preserved for a technical examination and the Garda Technical Bureau are attending the scene.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area - between 12.00pm Thursday and 12.00pm Friday - and may have information to contact the incident room at Castlebar Garda station on 094-9038-200, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line at 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.

Officers have said they are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident.
