A post mortem is expected to be carried out on the remains of an inmate who died in an altercation at Cork Prison.

Gardai are investigating the incident - an apparent row with another prisoner over a TV remote-control in the prison's kitchen.

The victim, Graham Johnston, 41, suffered stab wounds to the chest.

Prison staff intervened and a local doctor and Gardaí were called - however Mr Johnston was pronounced dead by a local doctor a short time later.

Johnston had been serving time for theft and burglary offences and was due to be released in November 2017.

He began his sentence in 2011 and was not believed to be violent in nature.

A forensic examination of the scene will be carried out while the state pathologist conducts the post mortem.

No one else suffered any injuries during the incident.
