Officials from the Department of Communications will appear before the Committee on Transport and Communications to address concerns regarding the proposed Eircode postcode system.

The new system, which has been described as a smart location code for every residential and business address to be located, will be implemented across the country from next year.

Capita Business Support Services Ireland - the company awarded the contract for establishing and implementing the new system - will also be attendance.

The Department of Communications has stated nobody will be forced to use the new postcode system when it's rolled out next year.

The Government is spending over €20m on the system over the next ten years.

Liam Duggan, director with Eircode, spoke to Lunchtime today. When asked by Jonathan Healy if the address could be sold to a company who might need it for marketing, Mr Duggan replied: "We will have a code of practice.

"The database is available commercially. There are no personal details in there. In terms of marketers, they want to profile people, male, female, age bracket and so on. None of that information is in the database."
