Gardaí have confirmed that Paul Gallagher (26), whose body was found in Co Meath yesterday, was shot multiple times.
He was originally from Donaghmede in Dublin, but had been missing from his Drogheda home for a number of days.
A farmer discovered the remains on his land between Slane and Collon at around 5pm yesterday afternoon.
While officers are not officially confirming it, he is understood to be known to the gardaí.
Gardai are appealing for information
Investigating officers have launched a public appeal for information after formally launching a murder investigation.
They are particularly interested in the car he is believed to have been travelling in: a Red Volkswagen Golf with a '01 LH' registration.
When last seen, Mr Gallagher was wearing a navy tracksuit top, grey tracksuit bottoms and white runners
Anyone with information is asked to contact Navan garda station.
Superintendent Paul Moran from the Garda Press Office says officers are appealing for information.
