The shooter who killed at least 14 people at Charles University, Prague, is reportedly being linked to a double homicide that happened in east Prague last week.

At least 14 people have died following the shooting in central Prague, Czech Republic, while 25 have been injured, 10 of which are seriously injured.

The body of the gunman - a 24-year-old student at Charles University in Prague - was discovered in the university's philosophy building, according to officials.

Prague-based journalist Thomas Smith told Newstalk Breakfast Prague has always been seen as a safe city around Europe.

“It’s the worst mass shooting in the Czech Republic,” he said.

He also said the shooter was found with multiple other firearms and rounds of ammunition, which he was legally allowed to own.

“This was something he not only planned for a long time, but he planned to kill many more people,” he said.

Homicide in east Prague

The shooter is reported to have killed his father earlier in the day in a town bordering Prague.

There are now links being made between the shooter and a double homicide that happened in east Prague last week.

“Police have been looking for a perpetrator,” Mr Smith said. “Last night, the police chief of the Czech Republic made a direct link between those two murders in the forest and the killer yesterday.

“It’s extremely tragic but it does provide some closure.”

There are also unverified reports that the shooter had posted about his plans on the app Telegram, known as a platform for right-wing extremists.

Police in Prague had closed one building of the university amid fears a shooting would occur.

Mr Smith explained only one building was closed because the university’s different faculties are based in the different buildings in Prague.

There will a minute of silence across the Czech Republic on Saturday while flags will be flown at half-mass.

Mr Smith said one student tragically fell to their death while climbing on a window ledge to escape.
