President Michael D Higgins said An Garda Síochána has grown from a "complex history" at a commemoration for Gardaí who died in service.

The President, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee and others attended a wreath laying ceremony and the unveiling of a monument to remember the 1,800 An Garda Síochána members who have in its 101 years.

Taking place from 3.30am, the ceremony marks the introduction of a refurbished Garda Monument of Remembrance in Phoenix Park, which includes all members of An Garda Síochána who died in service.

Speaking at the memorial, President Higgins welcomed the inclusion of more members of An Garda Síochána on the monument.

“I am honoured to join with you all today as we remember and pay tribute to all those who have lost their lives in An Garda Síochána over the last 101 years,” he said.

While An Garda Síochána has a “complex” history, President Higgins praised the organisation that exists today.

“From that complex history, and indeed informed by it, emerged a police service to which we have been able to entrust our safety,” he said.

"The transition to a largely unarmed civil authority, when it came, is an important part of the history of the foundation of the State."

'The most sudden circumstances'

The President also said the ceremony reminded him of “those taken in the most sudden circumstances”.

“We are reminded of the bravery which is represented by all those who committed their lives to public safety, knowing that on any given day, they could find themselves in the greatest of circumstances,” he said.

President Higgins said Ireland “owes a particular debt of gratitude to all those who serve in An Garda Síochána, and in each of our emergency services”.

“All those commit their working lives to An Garda Síochána contribute to the public good, the public space, the shared world, protecting our citizens from harm and protecting them day-in and day-out,” he said.

'Sacrifice, dedication and professionalism'

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said it was his "privilege" to acknowledge the sacrifices made by An Garda Síochána in its 101-year history.

"Their service involves sacrifice, dedication, and professionalism," he said.

"The Monument of Remembrance is a visual reminder of the colleagues we've lost all too soon.

"Their life meant so much to so many, to their family, to their friends, to their colleagues. And I hope that every day as we pass this monument, that we think of those who are remembered here.

"I also hope that will inspire all current Gardaí personnel to think of our own service to this society and the crucial role that we all play to keep people safe."
