The President has joined other heads of state in Belgium for a memorial ceremony to mark 100 years since the beginning of World War 1.
This morning he attended an event in Liege, and later, the President and Mrs Higgins will attend a service in Mons, where the first British and Irish soldiers killed in the conflict are buried.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys attended memorial events in Glasgow alongside British Prime Minister David Cameron and Commonwealth representatives.
Later she'll attend a commemoration at St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast, before laying a wreath at City Hall in memory of those Irish Soldiers who gave their lives in World War One.
