President Michael D. Higgins has visited a farm and equestrian stables on day three of his State visit to Britain.

He will attend a ceremony for Northern Ireland later and a concert tonight.

Sheep, lambs, pigs, chickens and cows were all on the menu for the visit to the farm this morning.

Special wellington boots were not needed, as the sun shone.

The Food Animal Initiative (FAI) is about building a sustainable food chain. President Higgins and his wife Sabina were briefed on the farms, before touring and seeing various animals.

Mrs. Higgins declared they were both farmers children, and took a keen interest in a lamb, nuzzling its face.

She showed similar interest in the pigs, declaring she had read a book called 'The Pig' and that they are wonderful creatures.

The visit continues at an Equestrian Centre in Newbury, before President returns to Windsor for a reception on Northern Ireland and attending an Irish themed concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London tonight.

Dubliners Imelda May, and Glen Hansard are among the artists that will sing at the State visit concert  tonight.

In a speech in London last night during the State visit, Michael D. Higgins raised a toast to England in the World Cup because the Irish soccer team will not be there.

Dublin Lord Mayor Oisin Quinn says the trip is great so far.

Tonight the President wil attend an Irish cultural event at the Royal Albert Hall, celebrating Irish music, song, dance and poetry. And you can watch that live on newstalk.ie from 8pm this evening.
