Fianna Fáíl has published a Bill which it says would avoid a repeat of the recent controversy surrounding the property tax.

The Bill would ensure that the Revenue Commissioners would be unable to charge anybody for the property tax the year before it falls due.

The chairman of the Revenue Commissioners is to attend an Oireachtas Committee to tomorrow to explain why some payment methods will be charged immediately even though the tax does not fall due until January.

Finance spokesman Michael McGrath says his Bill would force the Revenue to ask someone for their credit card details at a later stage.

It comes as the Revenue Commissioners have extended the paper filing deadline for Local Property Tax by one week.

Under the original timeline, people who filed their 2013 return on paper only had until tomorrow to tell Revenue how they intended to pay next year's tax. The new deadline gives people an extra week, until next Thursday November 14th.

The online deadline is November 27th.

Yesterday the Taoiseach said there was no obligation on anyone to pay the 2014 property tax, despite any letter they might have received from Revenue.
