The Road Safety Authority is welcoming a Government proposal to split the organisation into two separate bodies.
It follows a final report of an independent external review into the body’s mandate - with one agency to oversee the delivery of services like the NCT, and the other to focus on road safety initiatives.
CEO of the RSA Sam Waide has said increased funding is needed.
"We welcome the priorities to increase the focus on road safety," he said.
"The independent review of our essay confirmed and recommended a sustainable funding model for road safety in Ireland and we welcome that.
"It is about actually changing outcomes for the better and reducing the risk of loved ones being lost and serious injuries changing individuals and family life forever."
14 people have been killed on the roads in the first four weeks of 2025.
