The Justice Minister has said his department is working on legislation to allow Gardaí to give evidence in the District Court remotely.
Jim O’Callaghan said too much Garda time is spent in court rooms for the likes of routine, uncontested applications.
He also plans to free up more time for Gardaí by digitising documents such as bench warrants.
Minister O’Callaghan said the public will notice more officers on the street.
“I have instructed my department that I want that legislation,” he said.

“They're working on it - I can't give you a timeline as to when it's going to happen, but it's certainly going to happen within my term of office.”
Minister O’Callaghan said the new legislation will ensure that when it comes to procedures before the District Court, there can be remote hearings.
“Rather than Gardaí having to physically turn up, instead, they'll be able to make the application remotely,” he said.
“It's going to save time and it's going to get them out in the street.”
