People will get the chance to pick up props from some of Ireland’s greatest film and TV productions at an upcoming auction in Dublin.
Some 1,800 pieces will go under the hammer on the day – including items from films like The Banshees of Inisherin, My Left Foot, and Michael Collins.
The collection is valued at €400,000 and is currently owned by prop hire business Historic Interiors.
Manager Kevin McNulty joined Moncrieff today to talk about some of the history behind the business.
“My father is a hoarder/collector who has amassed quite a considerable collection since the 60s,” he said.
“It contains a lot of things that relate to social history like the things you use in your kitchen; things that were used to make things and things from offices.
“Somebody from the film industry had asked my father if could they hire some of these items and that’s how it came about.”
Mr McNulty took over from his father in the 90s and developed the collection further.
“I got involved in the business then and over the next few years we started to really think about it,” he said.
“Up to that point, we just had a collection of items, we then began to think of how we could tell a story through items from then on.”
Mr McNulty brought a number of items from the collection into the studio today – including a school satchel from Angela’s Ashes and a gun from Michael Collins.
He said the company had a huge stockpile of items that could tell stories – which they could then rent to film and TV productions.
“Our collection was huge, we had tens of thousands of items you could choose from,” said Mr McNulty.
“We could do things from 1660, 1760, 1860, and 1960 – the whole shebang. We can tell multiple stories from within those periods.”
The manager said his business has also been involved with famous TV shows, such as Father Ted.
“My memory of that was, a lady who I knew well had come up to me and told me she was doing a show about three priests who lived on an island in Ireland,” said Mr McNulty.
“The brief she was given was to look for 'twee' religious items!
“We had a blinking Jesus, like a hologram picture, and a few other things, so we sold them some bits from that.”
Mr McNulty said some actors get “very attached to props” as he recalled Brendan Gleeson recently purchasing a chair from the set of Banshees of Inisherin.
