The barrister for Gerard Cervi has said the case against him for murder in 2018 is nothing more than suspicion.
Mr Cervi, from East Wall, County Dublin, pleaded not guilty to murdering Bobby Messett at Bray Boxing Club on June 5th, 2018.
He also denies attempting to kill two other men, including boxing coach Pete Taylor.
In his closing speech at the Criminal Court today, his defence barrister said the prosecution’s case falls well short of being proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
He said it was nothing more than suspicion and lacked the proof needed for a guilty verdict.
He accused the other side of leaving things out because they didn’t suit their case, and also said that eyewitness descriptions of the shooter didn’t match the description of his client, particularly when it comes to height.
Yesterday, the prosecution concluded its case, saying there is “overwhelming evidence” against Mr Cervi.
The jury will begin deliberations soon.
The trial was originally supposed to take place in June 2021, but was delayed when two jurors asked to leave and then collapsed when one of the remaining 10 jurors became ill and was unable to continue.
