In the North, police are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault in Newry during the early hours of yesterday morning.

At around 2.30am, an altercation took place between a number of men in the area of Canal Street.

A 28-year-old man sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose, fractures to his eye socket and jaw and bruising to his face and body.

A 21-year-old man was arrested in the Newry area yesterday evening.

He appeared before Newry Magistrates Court earlier today charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was remanded in custody.
